Sony WH-1000XM6 Died While Charging? Here Is What We Found Inside

A pair of Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones that suddenly shuts off while charging can look completely normal from the outside.

That was not the case once we opened this pair.

This customer contacted Joe’s GE Repair Center after their WH-1000XM6 stopped working while being charged. The customer told us they believed they were using a charger with much higher wattage than the headphones needed and reported hearing what sounded like an internal component fail before the headphones completely shut down.

Once our technicians opened the headphones, we found significant electrical and thermal damage across the internal electronics.

There is one important distinction, though: we cannot confirm that charger wattage itself caused this failure. We did not receive the exact charger or cable for testing, and USB C charging systems are designed to control how much power a connected device receives.

Quick Answer: Can A High Wattage USB C Charger Damage Sony XM6 Headphones?

Opening The Sony WH-1000XM6

The WH-1000XM6 contains electronics on both sides of the headphones, which means diagnosing a complete power failure requires more than simply looking at the USB C charging port.

Our technicians opened both earcups and began tracing the failure through the internal electronics.

It quickly became clear that this was not a simple worn charging port.

Severe Damage On The Left Side Bluetooth Board

The first major problem was found on the Bluetooth board located inside the left side of the headphones.

The board showed obvious signs of severe electrical and thermal damage.

This type of visible damage is very different from a normal battery failure or worn charging connector. Something significant happened electrically inside the headphones.

The Right Side Power Electronics Also Needed Inspection

The WH-1000XM6 also contains important power-related electronics on the right side of the headphones.

When a pair of headphones completely loses power, our technicians have to inspect the entire power path rather than assuming the charging connector is the only failed component.

The Burned 12 Pin Connector Was A Major Clue

One of the most dramatic findings was the damage around the 12 pin internal connector and wiring.

This area showed clear evidence of excessive heat and electrical damage.

A connector that looks like this tells us the failure generated enough heat to physically damage the surrounding components.

At this point, we are well beyond a simple “my headphones will not charge” diagnosis.

More Evidence Of Internal Electrical Damage

Additional inspection revealed more damage across the internal electronics.
