Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Batteries on the Sony WF-1000XM5 Earbuds at Home
In this detailed repair guide, we show you how to replace the left and right batteries on the Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds at home. Follow the instructions and refer to the corresponding images to restore your device’s battery life.
Step 1: Separate the 2 Halves of the Earbud
1.1. Apply heat (~170° Celsius at low air flow) around the edges of the earbud to soften the adhesive between the 2 halves of the plastic housing.

1.2. Insert a plastic spudger in the groove and gently apply pressure to separate the 2 halves.

Step 2: Remove the Battery
2.1. Apply a bit of heat to soften the adhesive holding the ribbon connector.

2.2. Avoid heating the side with the speaker.

2.3. Remove the battery solder. You can use a solder wick to accelerate the process.

Optional Steps
2.4. Apply a bit of heat to the circuit board behind the battery. This will soften the adhesive that secures it to the plastic housing, allowing you to remove the board for better access during battery replacement.

2.5. Insert a flathead screwdriver behind the circuit board and gently pry out the circuit board.

2.6. Extract the inner components and the plastic housing from the outer plastic shell.

Step 3: Install New Battery
3.1. Clean up the old solder points using the solder wick. (Optional)

3.2. Place the battery’s negative terminal toward the speaker and solder the connection points. Apply a bit of flux for superior adhesion.

3.3. Insert the battery housing.

3.4. Clean the battery connections using isopropyl alcohol.

3.5. Extract the old adhesive from the 2 halves of the earbud’s outer plastic shell. Apply a bit of heat to soften the glue, then remove it with a plastic spudger.

3.6. Apply new adhesive along the edges of the plastic housing.

3.7. Insert the inner components into the outer shell. Align the microphone with the slot on the outer plastic shell on both earbuds.

3.8. Press the 2 halves of the earbud together and clean any excess adhesive using isopropyl alcohol.

3.9. Use a rubber band or plastic clamp to apply consistent pressure on the earbud while the adhesive cures. Leave the earbud for 24 hours for the glue to set.
