Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Old Charging Port on the 2021-2022 Apple iPad Pro (5th and 6th Gen) 12.9-Inch at Home

In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace the old wobbly charging port on the Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.

Step 1: Extract the Display

This is the most critical step of the repair. Use extreme caution when separating the display from the housing, as applying too much pressure can easily crack the screen, especially around the edges. Work slowly and patiently, taking care not to force the display loose.

1.1. Apply heat with a heat gun at 105°C (221°F) along the edges of the iPad Pro for 15-20 seconds to soften the adhesive holding the display to the housing.

1.2. Insert the star pry tool into the seam between the display and the housing. Apply more heat, as necessary, to break down the adhesive.

1.3. Insert a pick along the seam of the display and slowly work your way around all sides to remove the glue.

Ninja Tip: Do not push the pick deep into the seam, as it will damage the underlying antennas. Insert it just enough to create a small gap between the display and the housing.

1.4. Insert a second pick and slowly work your way around the edge of the display.

1.5. Gently lift the picks to separate the display from the housing.

1.6. Use your finger to widen the gap and cut the adhesive tape with a pick as you work your way around all sides. Do not force your way, or you will end up breaking the screen.

1.7. Gently move the display to reveal the Face ID ribbon cable, then unfasten the 2 screws securing the plate over the connector.

1.8. Disconnect the Face ID ribbon cable with a flathead screwdriver.

1.9. Flip the display over and peel the tape over the charging port to reveal the screws. Do not yank the display ribbon cable attached to the main board.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery Cable

2.1. Unscrew the battery with a 2.0mm Phillips screwdriver.

2.2. Disconnect the battery ribbon with a flathead screwdriver, then press the power button to drain all power from the board.

Step 3: Remove the Worn-out Charger Port

3.1. Unfasten 5 screws from the shield to reveal the charging port.

3.2. Unfasten 2 screws holding the charging port to the housing, detach the ribbon connector, and discard the old unit.

3.3. Clean the charger port thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol.

Step 4: Install New Charging Port

4.1. Install the new charging port on the housing. Peel the adhesive tape cover before installing to ensure that it stays in place.

4.2. Connect the ribbon cable and fasten the 2 screws on the new charging port.

4.3. Place the metal shield over the charging port and fasten all 5 screws.

Important Note: Peel the old adhesive tape from the edge of the display and clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol before installing new double-sided tape.

Step 5: Connect the Battery

Reconnect the battery ribbon cable, reinstall the shield, and secure it with the screws. Then fold the black tape back over the connection to protect it.

Step 6: Reattach the Display

6.1. Apply new double-sided adhesive tape around the edge of the display. Use the thinner tape along the left and top edges, and the thicker tape along the right and bottom edges, where the bezel is wider. Be careful not to cover the front-facing camera with adhesive.

6.2. Cut the excess adhesive tape from all 4 corners of the display.

6.3. Flip the display over the housing and connect the Face ID ribbon cable. Fasten 2 screws to ensure a secure connection.

6.4. Peel off the protective cover from the adhesive tape, align the display with the housing, and gently press along the edges with your fingers to ensure the adhesive bonds to both surfaces.
