Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Old Charging Port on the 2018-2020 Apple iPad Pro (3rd and 4th Gen) 12.9-Inch at Home

In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace the old wobbly charging port on the 2018-2020 Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.

Step 1: Extract the Display

Place the iPad Pro with the display up and the volume buttons on the bottom left.

1.1. Heat the screen over the volume control with a heat gun set to 200°C (392°F). Once the adhesive has softened, insert a thin flexible star pry tool into the seam between the display and the housing to separate them.

Start lifting the display from the housing

Pro Tip: Pry the display with a gentle up-and-down motion while moving the heat gun along the edge of the screen. Avoid concentrating heat on a single area, as excessive heat can damage the internal cables and connectors or deform the housing.

1.2. Once the screen starts to lift, insert a plastic pick tool into the gap to prevent the adhesive from resealing as you continue to separate the display from the housing.

Insert a pick tool in the gap

1.3. Insert a second pick tool and work your way along the seam on all 4 sides. Do not push the pick deep into the seam, or you may tear the display ribbon cable.  Apply heat as necessary to soften the adhesive.

Step 2: Remove the Old Charging Port

2.1. Flip the display over carefully without tearing the ribbon cable. Unfasten the 5 screws over the top plate to reveal the charging port. The single screw at the top of the picture is slightly longer than the others. Store them separately to avoid mix-up during reassembly.

2.3. Disconnect the ribbon cable with a nylon spudger and peel the tape. Once the old charging port comes off, discard it. Clean the area thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove any old gunk that may have accumulated over time.

Repair Ninja Tip: Locate the two divots along the edge of the housing where the display magnet is seated. Cut small slits in the adhesive tape above and below each divot to allow the magnet to sit flush against the housing and prevent tension from building up in the tape as you install the display.

4.1. Connect the display ribbon to the main board. Place it over the top and press with your fingers till you feel it clip in.
