Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Broken, Cracked, or Damaged Display on the Apple iPad Air 4 at Home

In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace the shattered, cracked, or unresponsive touchscreen display on the Apple iPad Air 4 yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.

Step 1: Extract the Damaged LCD Screen from the Housing

Before starting the repair, make sure the iPad is switched off and disconnected from the power source.

1.1. Heat the edge of the display with a heat gun at 200°C (392°F) at low airflow to soften the adhesive.

1.2. Insert the flexible star pry tool into the seam between the display and the housing near the volume control buttons and gently pry up the LCD.

1.3. As the screen starts to lift, insert a plastic pick into the seam and widen the gap. Apply heat constantly to keep the adhesive from hardening.

1.4. Insert a second pick tool and drag it along the seam of the display housing to sever the adhesive. Do not insert the pick tool deep into the wedge, or you might damage the underlying display ribbon cable or the GPS and cellular antennas.

1.5. As you approach the crack on the display, gently pry the display off rather than moving the pick tool along the display seam. This will keep the broken display intact, preventing glass shards from spreading everywhere.

1.6. Work your way patiently along all 4 sides until the screen lifts off the housing. Once the screen starts to come off, place the iPad vertically on the anti-skid rubber work mat and use your fingers to widen the gap between the display and the housing.

1.7. Heat the bezel constantly as you gradually lift the screen away from the housing with your fingers. Repeat the process on all 4 sides until the display pops off the housing.

Step 2: Disconnect the Display Connector

2.1. Flip the display on its side and unfasten the 3 screws securing the top covers over the display ribbon.

2.2. Unfasten the display ribbon with a nylon spudger and set the screen aside.

Step 3: Clean the Display Housing

Scrape away any old adhesive tape from the housing with a flathead screwdriver. Be careful not to damage any internal connectors, cables, or the battery as you work your way along the seam.

Step 4: Transplant the 2 Magnets from the Damaged to the New Display

4.1. Pry under the 2 magnets on the cracked display with a nylon spudger. They come in 2 pieces and tend to bend slightly. Do not panic.

4.2. Apply fresh 2.0mm 3M double-sided tape along the seam of the housing. Press the tape with your fingernails or plastic spudger, ensuring a firm fit. Cut off the excess tape from the 4 corners with a paper cutter.

4.3. Where the magnet sits on the housing, cut small slits in the adhesive tape to remove tightness and ensure a waterproof seal.

4.4. Align the first magnet on the housing and press down with your fingers or a nylon spudger to ensure it adheres well to the surface.

Important Note: When installing the 2nd magnet, you must eyeball the position to ensure a proper fit.

4.5. Cut a small piece of double-sided tape and place it on the edge of the display where the magnet will sit, then gently stick the magnet on top of it.

Step 5: Install the New Display

5.1. Flip the display on its side and connect the 3 ribbon cables. Press down with your fingers to ensure a firm connection.

5.2. Install the 2 top plates and secure them with 3 screws.

5.3. Peel the cover off the double-sided adhesive, align the display with the housing, and press down on all sides along the bezel to ensure the screen adheres to the housing.

5.4. Peel the protective film off the new display.
