Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Old Charging Port on the 2018-2020 Apple iPad Pro (1st and 2nd Gen) 11-Inch at Home

In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace the old wobbly charging port on the 2018-2020 Apple iPad Pro 11-inch yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.

Step 1: Separate the Display from the Housing

1.1. With a heat gun set at 200°C (392°F), apply heat uniformly along the seam where the display meets the housing. Insert a flexible thin star pry tool into the seam between the display and the housing, and gently pry the screen off the adhesive tape.

1.2. Insert a plastic pick tool into the gap and slowly work your way along the edge of the display on all four sides. Do not insert the pick tool deep into the wedge, or you might damage the underlying display ribbon cable or the GPS and cellular antennas.

1.3. Stand the iPad up, place your finger in the gap, and apply heat uniformly along the edge of the display to soften the adhesive tape and extract the screen from the housing. Do not apply extreme pressure, as the screen may crack along the edges. Repeat this process on all 4 sides.

Optional Step: If you notice any excess adhesive, carefully remove it using a flathead screwdriver. Take care not to scratch the housing or damage internal cables or antennas.

1.4. Once the screen pops off the housing, lift it slightly to reveal the Face ID ribbon cable. Unfasten the 2 screws over the connector, set aside the top plastic cover, and disconnect the ribbon cable with a nylon spudger.

1.5. Flip the display over carefully without tearing the display ribbon cable, then unfasten the 3 screws over the charging port and remove the top cover.

1.6. Unfasten the display ribbon cables and very carefully set the screen aside.

Step 2: Remove the Old Charging Port

2.1. Unfasten 2 screws securing the charging port to the housing with a 2.0mm Phillips screwdriver.

2.2. Disconnect the charging port ribbon cable and peel the tape to separate it from the housing, then discard it.

Step 3: Install New Charging Port

3.1. Place the new charger port in the slot on the housing. Peel off any exterior tape that might cover the connection points from the factory.

3.2. Fasten the 2 screws on the charging port and connect the ribbon cable.

Step 4: Assemble the Apple iPad Pro

4.1. Scrape off old adhesive tape from the housing with a flathead screwdriver.

4.2. Apply fresh adhesive tape on the housing. Use the 4mm tape on the bottom and right sides and the 2mm tape on the top and left sides, where the bezels are thinner.

4.3. Cut small slits in the tape where the magnet on the display will sit. This prevents the tape from tightening, ensuring a waterproof seal.

4.4. Connect the display to the main board.

4.5. Install the top plate over the connectors and fasten all 3 screws.

4.6. Flip the display over and connect the Face ID ribbon cable to the main board. Install the top plate over the connector and fasten the 2 screws.

4.7. Align the display with the housing and run your fingers along the edge of the display so that it fuses with the housing.
