Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing a Broken, Scratched, or Cracked Outer Earcup Metal Cover on the Bose QuietComfort (QC) 35 (1st and 2nd Generations) Headphones at Home
In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace a damaged earcup housing cover on the Bose QC 35 (1st and 2nd Generation) headphones yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.
Step 1: Remove the Earpad Cushion
1.1. Grab the earpad cushion with your fingers, then pull it off the retaining clips.
1.2. Remove the mesh from the earcup and set it aside. It is secured with double-sided tape, so peel it away gently to preserve the adhesive for reinstallation.
Step 2: Extract the Outer Earcup Housing
2.1. Unfasten two 1.5mm screws on the left earcup (or 3 screws on the right side) holding the outer earcup housing and set them aside in one of the slots on the rubber work mat.
2.2. Flip the earcup to extract the outer earcup housing cover.
Extra Step for the Right Side: The right outer panel has two parts. You’ll need to remove the top section and transplant it onto the new earcup housing cover. Pop the retaining clip by pulling toward you, then unhook the other side from the groove and set the piece aside.
Step 3: Install a New Outer Earcup Housing Cover
Extra Steps for the Right Side: Align the tab at one end of the plastic piece with the groove on the new metal earcup housing cover, then lock the two pieces together from the other end. Press the two pieces with your fingers to ensure the old adhesive on the salvaged part bonds with the new metal panel.
3.1. Place the outer earcup housing cover over the earcup. Make sure that it’s flush with the surface, then flip the earcup and secure the cover with 2 Phillips screws for the left side (or 3 screws for the right side).
Step 4: Install the Earpad Cushions
4.1. Reinstall the mesh pad over the earcup housing with double-sided adhesive tape.
4.2. Grab the earpad cushion, align the lip with the slot in the earcup housing, then push the retaining clips into place.
