Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing a Malfunctioning AUX Audio Jack (2.5mm Port) on the Bose QuietComfort (QC) 45 Headphones at Home

In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace a loose or wobbly AUX port on the Bose QC 45 headphones yourself. The AUX port is located inside the left earcup. For this repair, we will only work on the left side. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.

Step 1: Extract the Left Earpad Cushion

1.1. Insert one finger behind the old earpad cushion until you feel the retaining ring at its base.

1.2. Grip the ring with your fingers, then pull it upward and toward the center of the earcup to release the retaining clips and remove the cushion.

1.3. Extract the foam mesh with the pry tool and set it aside.

Step 2: Remove the Outer Earcup Housing Cover

2.1. Unfasten 2 screws holding the earcup housing cover with a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver and set them aside.

2.2. Flip the earcup gently to dislodge the housing. If a clip is stuck, poke it with a flathead screwdriver or tweezers until the housing pops out.

2.3. Unplug the ribbon cable for the buttons from the PCB. Use a flathead screwdriver or precision tweezers to remove the adhesive patch covering the connector.

Step 3: Extract the Malfunctioning AUX Audio Port

3.1. Unfasten 2 screws holding the AUX audio jack to the earcup housing.

3.2. Peel the sticker from over the AUX connection with a flathead screwdriver and set it aside.

3.3. Insert a flathead screwdriver under the faulty AUX port to extract it from the earcup housing. Disconnect the ribbon connector on the right, then desolder the ribbon connected to the top of the board.

Pro Tip: If any connector is glued to the main board, soften the adhesive with a heat gun or soldering iron before peeling it away using precision tweezers.

Step 4: Install a New AUX Audio Jack

4.1. Grab a new AUX audio jack, align it with the earcup housing, and resolder the 3 points on the ribbon cable to the PCB.

4.2. Plug in the shorter ribbon cable with the help of precision tweezers.

4.3. Align the 2 pins on the earcup housing with the slots in the AUX port, then fasten the audio jack with 2 Phillips screws.

Step 5: Reassemble Your Bose QuietComfort (QC) 45 Headphones

5.1. Connect the ribbon cable on the outer earcup housing cover to the PCB.

5.2. Gently flip the earcup housing to align the screw holes, then fasten the 2 screws on the left side. Make sure the cover is fully flush with the speaker housing.

5.3. Align the mesh with the earcup, then press down on both ends so that the double-sided tape sticks to the earcup housing.

5.4. Grab the earpad cushion and align the clips before pushing down with your fingers. Once you hear all the retaining clips click into place, tug on all sides to confirm the earpad cushion is securely installed.
