Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Malfunctioning Main Board on the Garmin Fenix 5X Smartwatch at Home

In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace a dead or malfunctioning PCB main board on the Garmin Fenix 5X yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.

Step 1: Extract the Display from the Watch Housing

1.1. Unfasten the 5 screws from the watch face with a T6 screwdriver and store them carefully in one of the slots provided on the rubber work mat.

1.2. Flip the display gently to reveal the display connection. Remove the protective film from the connector port, then disconnect the ribbon cable with a flathead screwdriver and set the touch screen aside.

Step 2: Extract the Old Main Board

2.1. Disconnect the battery from the main board with a flathead screwdriver.

2.2. Unfasten the 2 screws holding the main board to the watch housing with a T5 screwdriver.

2.3. Remove the GPS antenna and set it aside in one of the slots provided on the rubber work mat.

2.4. Insert a flathead screwdriver underneath the main board where there are no components to dislodge it from the clips, then flip the housing and shake the main board out.

2.5. Pry the battery away from the adhesive tape on the malfunctioning main PCB with your fingers.

2.6. Disconnect the battery ribbon cable from the main board and discard the PCB.

Step 3: Install a New Main Motherboard

3.1. Connect the battery ribbon to the new main board.

3.2. Stick the battery to the main board. If the old adhesive on the battery fails to stick to the new main board, cut and apply a fresh piece of double-sided tape to the battery.

3.3. Align the new main board with the watch housing and press down till it clips into place.

3.4. Connect the battery ribbon to the main board.

3.5. Fasten 2 screws to secure the main board to the watch housing.

Step 4: Reassemble the Garmin Fenix 5X Multisport Watch

4.1. Place the GPS antenna back into the slot provided in the housing. Align the 2 clips on the edge of the antenna with those on the housing, and gently press down to secure them.

4.3. Place the gasket into the groove along the perimeter of the housing to ensure a water-resistant seal.
