Did Bose Fix the QC Ultra Hinge Problem? (2025 Design Update Explained)

If you own a pair of Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones, there is a good chance you have heard about the hinge issue that many owners have experienced.

At Joe’s GE Repair Center, we repair hundreds of headphones every month. Beginning in 2025, we started seeing a noticeable increase in Bose QC Ultra hinge repairs arriving at our repair center.

At the same time, we also noticed something interesting.

Some of the newer QC Ultra headphones appeared to have a different hinge design.

This raised an important question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Bose Fix the QC Ultra Hinge Problem?

Yes. Based on the headphones we have inspected, Bose appears to have updated the hinge design in newer QuietComfort Ultra headphones manufactured around 2024 and later.

The updated hinge increases the metal hinge pin size from approximately 0.88mm to 1.95mm. The hinge pin hole and plastic hinge support structure were also increased in size.

This design change may help reduce hinge pin movement and improve long term durability.

Some newer color versions of the 1st Generation QC Ultra and all 2nd Generation QC Ultra headphones appear to include this updated hinge design.

During our repair testing we also confirmed that the new hinge design can be installed on the original QC Ultra headphones, allowing owners to upgrade their hinge during repair.

Customers looking to upgrade their hinge during repair can install the newer large pin hinge swivel design, available here:

The Bose QC Ultra Hinge Problem

Bose released two versions of the QC Ultra headphones.

QuietComfort Ultra 1st Generation released in 2023
QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Generation released in 2025

Beginning in early 2025, we started receiving many repair requests where customers reported

The metal hinge pin pushing into the plastic hinge housing
The hinge pin beginning to protrude outward
The hinge becoming loose or eventually breaking

This issue occurs because the metal hinge pin slowly damages the plastic support structure that holds it in place.

Once the pin begins moving inside the hinge assembly, the damage tends to worsen over time.

What Our Repair Shop Started Noticing

Our repair shop has been repairing headphones since 2014, and we have seen many hinge designs across many different brands.

In early 2026, we began noticing that some QC Ultra headphones had a different hinge construction.

At first we saw this in newer color versions of the 1st Generation QC Ultra, which appear to have been manufactured around 2024.

Soon after, we confirmed that the 2nd Generation QC Ultra headphones also include this updated hinge design.

This was a surprising discovery because manufacturers rarely strengthen hinge designs between generations.

The Engineering Change Bose Made

After closely inspecting both hinge versions, we found several key differences.

Original hinge pin diameter approximately 0.88mm

Updated hinge pin diameter approximately 1.95mm

This means the hinge pin in the updated design is more than twice the size of the original.

The hinge pin hole and plastic hinge support structure were also enlarged to support the larger pin.

These changes increase the structural strength of the hinge assembly and may help prevent the pin from pushing into the plastic housing.

For customers repairing their headphones, the large pin hinge upgrade version is available here:

Can You Upgrade the Hinge on Older QC Ultra Headphones?

Yes.

During our testing we confirmed that the updated hinge design can be installed on the original 1st Generation QC Ultra headphones.

This means owners of earlier QC Ultra headphones can upgrade their hinge during repair.

Benefits of upgrading include

Stronger hinge design
Reduced risk of hinge pin movement
A longer lasting repair

For many customers this upgrade allows them to keep their headphones working instead of replacing the entire headset.

What Should You Do If Your QC Ultra Hinge Is Failing?

If your Bose QuietComfort Ultra hinge is starting to loosen or the hinge pin is pushing out, you have two good options depending on your comfort level with repairs.

Repair the Headphones Yourself

Many customers choose to repair their headphones at home. If you are comfortable working with small electronics, replacing the hinge assembly can restore the strength of the hinge and prevent further damage.

Upgrading to the larger pin hinge design can also improve long term durability.

Send Your Headphones in for Professional Repair

If you would rather have a technician handle the repair, our team at Joe’s GE Repair Center can restore the hinge and inspect the rest of the headphones for additional wear.

Many customers choose this option to ensure the repair is completed quickly and correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Bose QC Ultra hinges break?

The hinge pin can slowly damage the plastic support structure that holds it in place. Once the plastic weakens, the pin begins moving and eventually pushes into or out of the hinge housing.

Did Bose change the QC Ultra hinge design?

Yes. Newer QC Ultra headphones appear to include a redesigned hinge with a significantly larger hinge pin and support structure.

Can a Bose QC Ultra hinge be repaired?

Yes. In many cases the hinge can be repaired or replaced without replacing the entire headset.

Can older QC Ultra headphones be upgraded to the new hinge design?

Yes. Our testing confirmed that the updated hinge design can be installed on earlier QC Ultra models during repair.

Final Thoughts

Bose does not usually announce structural design changes like this publicly.

However, based on the headphones we have inspected, it appears that Bose strengthened the QC Ultra hinge design beginning around 2024 manufacturing runs.

If the larger hinge pin continues to perform well, this update could reduce one of the most common QC Ultra repair issues.

We will continue monitoring repair data as more of these headphones enter the market and will share updates with the repair community.
