Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Batteries on the Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones at Home
In this detailed repair guide, we show you how to replace the worn-out battery on the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones at home. Follow the instructions and refer to the corresponding images to complete the repair yourself.
Step 1: Remove the Right Earpad
1.1. The battery is located inside the right earpad. Insert a strong metal pry tool under the earpad cushion near the charging port, and gently pry it out from the rest of the earcup.

1.2. Remove the mesh piece and store it safely.

Step 2: Disconnect the Microphone from the Speaker Housing
2.1. Peel off the rubber gasket using a flathead screwdriver.

2.2. Press the side of the 2nd rubber gasket using a flathead screwdriver, and it should pop off.

2.3. Get underneath the “Y” shaped plastic tab using a flathead screwdriver and peel it off the adhesive.

2.4. Use a plastic spudger to disconnect the ribbon cable from the connector.

Step 3: Remove the Speaker Housing
3.1. Unfasten the 5 small black screws and store them safely.

3.2. Extract the plastic speaker housing using a flathead screwdriver.

3.3. As you pull the speaker housing, push the ribbon from the microphone through the opening. The ribbon is connected to the power board, and there is limited slack. Using excessive force may rip out the connector or damage the cable.

3.4. Once you create enough space, insert precision tweezers to disconnect the ribbon cable from the power board.

3.5. Disconnect the speaker wire from the power board.

Step 4: Remove the Old Battery
4.1. Unfasten the 2 small screws securing the battery case.

4.2. Unplug the battery from the power board.

4.3. Open the battery case to reveal the battery.

Step 5: Install a New Battery
5.1. Install a new 1050mAh battery and assemble the case.

5.2. Plug in the battery connector. Press down on both sides of the connector using a flathead screwdriver to secure the connection.

5.3. Place the battery case in its designated location and fasten the 2 screws.

Step 6: Attach the Speaker Housing
6.1. Connect the speaker wire to the power board. Pull the microphone cable through the opening on the speaker housing to create slack before the next step.

6.2. Connect the microphone ribbon to the power board.

6.3. Pull all the slack out from the microphone ribbon.

6.4. Fasten the 5 screws securing the speaker housing.

6.5. Connect the microphone cable to the speaker housing. Align the holes in the cable with the pins in the speaker driver, then press it down. The old adhesive is quite sticky and will hold the cable in place.

6.6. Align the 2 small holes in the “Y” shaped plastic housing with the 2 pins on the speaker driver and push down on it for a secure fit.

6.7. Tuck the ribbon cable inside the speaker housing using precision tweezers.

6.8. Install the rubber gasket.

6.9. Install the second rubber gasket. Using precision tweezers, insert the side of the gasket without the extension, then gently push the other side until it fits securely.

6.10. Install the foam mesh.

6.11. Align the earpad cushion with the earcup, find the indicator to identify which side the cushion is for, align it with the indicator on the bottom of the earcup, and press down for a secure fit.
