Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Broken or Damaged Hinge Swivel Assembly (Left and Right) on the Sony ULT WEAR WH-ULT900N Wireless Bluetooth Headphones at Home
In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace the left and right swivel hinge assemblies on the Sony WH-ULT900N wireless Bluetooth headphones at home. Follow the instructions and refer to the corresponding images to restore your device’s form and functionality.
Step 1: Remove the Earpad Cushion
1.1. Insert a strong metal pry tool into the edge between the earpad cushion and the earcup and carefully work it up and down to release the cushion from the headphone.

1.2. Remove the foam mesh and set it aside.

Step 2: Separate the Rear Touch Panel
2.1. Unfasten the 4 small black screws nearest to the speaker driver using a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver and store them safely. You may need to use precision tweezers to extract the screws once they come loose.

Note: The Sony ULT WEAR 900N uses screws of different sizes. Store them separately in the slots on the anti-skid heat-proof rubber work mat as you disassemble the headphones. This will help ensure each screw is returned to its correct location during reassembly.
2.2. Flip the headphones over, insert a flathead screwdriver into the seam between the rear touch panel and the earcup, and gently push the panel away from the rest of the earcup.

2.3. Disconnect the ribbon connector from the circuit board by pushing the tab up using a flathead screwdriver, then store the touch panel safely.

Step 3: Disconnect the Internal Cables
Disconnect all internal cables, including the battery on the right side, when replacing the right hinge-and-swivel assembly.

Step 4: Desolder the Main Cable from the Power Board
4.1. Remove the heat-resistant tape from over the solder points.

4.2. Apply soldering flux over the main wire connectors.

4.3. Click a photograph of the wires before unsoldering them from the circuit board.

4.4. Twist the wires from the top connection points into a bunch. This will help you recognise which wires go on which row while soldering them back on the circuit board. You don’t have to unsolder all the wires from the bottom row. Remove only the connectors attached to the main wire. Leave the rest as they will not interfere when you separate the earcup from the swivel-and-hinge assembly.

4.5. Clean the solder points using isopropyl alcohol.

Step 5: Separate the Earcup from the Hinge-and-Swivel Assembly
5.1. Unfasten the 2 small silver screws using a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver.

5.2. Remove the gasket using fine-nose tweezers.

5.3. Gently pop the earcup from the hinge-and-swivel assembly using your fingers and set it aside.

Step 6: Extract the Arm Hinge
6.1. Flip the headphones over and remove the plastic tab.

6.2. Pull the green gasket out from the side where the main wire is attached and store it safely.

6.3. Remove the top part of the headband arm hanger from the other end using a flathead screwdriver.

6.4. Unfasten the Phillips screw holding the arm hanger.

6.5. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the seam between the two halves of the arm hanger and pry around till they separate.

6.6. Once the part is free, wiggle the part around as you pull it out since it is attached to a tab. Do not pull the plastic piece with brute force, as it will break the tab. Then you will need to buy a new complete arm hinge assembly.

6.7. Remove the small metal horseshoe piece. Insert the tweezers into the 2 small holes to prop it up from its slot, then remove the piece with a flathead screwdriver.

6.8. Pull the main cable out from the arm hinge. If the part is damaged, broken, worn out, or needs replacing, throw the old part in the bin. If not, keep the part aside safely.

Step 7: Remove the Swivel Assembly
7.1. Unfasten the 2 screws using a 1.5mm Phillip screwdriver.

7.2. Insert a strong metal pry tool into the seam between the slider mechanism and apply gentle pressure till the two halves separate.

7.3. Unfasten the 2 small Phillips screws from the swivel.

7.4. Pull the main wire out from the damaged swivel assembly.

Step 8: Install New Swivel Assembly
8.1. Unfasten the 2 screws on both sides of the new swivel assembly. This will help you feed the main wire through it quite easily.

8.2. Feed the main cable through the new swivel arm.

8.3. Assemble the new swivel arm and fasten the 2 screws.

8.4. Attach the new swivel arm to the top part of the slider mechanism, then fasten the 2 screws.

8.5. Align the white marking on the main cable with the groove on the top part of the slider mechanism, and pull the excess wire from the other end.

8.6. Push both halves of the slider mechanism together and clip them into place.

8.7. Fasten the 2 final screws holding the swivel hinge in place.

Step 9: Install New Hinge Arm
9.1. Feed the main wire through the end of the new hinge arm.

9.2. Align the hinge arm with the slider mechanism and secure it in place with the small metal horseshoe piece.

9.3. Push the main wire into the groove using a flathead screwdriver.

9.4. Align the top part of the arm hinge with the lower half and gently push it into the slot. You may need to push the small metal horseshoe piece into the slot with a flathead screwdriver again if the plastic part does not clip into place.

9.5. Click the ends of the plastic hinge arm into place.

9.6. Install the green rubber gasket.

9.7. Fasten the single screw at the top of the new arm hinge.

9.8. Flip the headphone over and install the ear cup swivel hinge.

Step 10: Install the Earcup
10.1. Align the two ends of the earcup with the slots provided on the arm hinge, then push them into place.

10.2. Fasten the 2 silver screws.

Step 11: Solder the Main Wires to the Power Board
11.1. Apply flux to the soldering points for a better connection.

11.2. Solder the wires into place according to the reference photos you took in Step 4.3 before desoldering.

11.3. Clean the excess flux with isopropyl alcohol before applying heat-resistant tape over the connection points.

11.4. Cut a piece of heat-resistant tape and place it over the connection points.

Step 12: Assemble the Sony WH-ULT900N Wireless Bluetooth Headphones
12.1. Push the main wire into the groove provided on the earcup using a flathead screwdriver.

12.2. Install the gasket.

12.3. Connect the internal cables, including the battery, when replacing the right hinge-and-swivel assemblies and the ribbon wire from the touch panel.

12.4. Flip the headphone over and fasten the 4 screws closest to the speaker driver.

12.5. Put the foam mesh back into place.

12.6. Align the notch on the earpad cushion with the dent at the top of the earcup and press the two halves together till they clip into place.
