Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Malfunctioning Bluetooth Board on the Sony WH-XB900N Wireless Bluetooth Headphones Yourself
In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace a malfunctioning Bluetooth board on the Sony WH-XB900N headphones yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.
Step 1: Remove the Left Earpad Cushion
The Bluetooth board on the Sony WH-XB900N is located inside the left earcup. For this repair, we will only disassemble the left side. Grab the sides of the earpad cushion with your hands and pull it away from the earcup.
Step 2: Disassemble the Left Earcup
2.1. Unfasten the 5 small black screws from the speaker housing with a 1.5 mm Phillips screwdriver.
2.2. Pull the speaker housing from the earcup to reveal the wires underneath. Be careful not to tear the speaker wires connected to the PCB.
2.3. Unplug the ribbon cables for the buttons to avoid accidentally powering on the headphones.
2.4. Apply soldering flux to all the wires connected to the main board, then desolder the wires. Once the speaker wires are disconnected, put the speaker housing aside safely.
Ninja Insight: We recommend spreading the wires with your fingers and taking a photo of the connections to use as a reference during resoldering. This will help you reconnect the wires in the correct order.
2.5. Unfasten 2 screws securing the Bluetooth board to the earcup housing, then pull the PCB out and discard it.
Step 3: Install a New Bluetooth Board
3.1. Grab a new Bluetooth board, place it into the slot in the earcup, and fasten two 1.5 mm Phillips screws to secure it in place.
3.2. Apply flux to the connection points on the new Bluetooth board, then resolder the wires using the reference photo.
3.3. Plug in the ribbon cable for the button.
3.4. Resolder the speaker wires, then clean all the solder points with isopropyl alcohol to remove any excess flux.
Step 4: Reassemble the Sony XB900N Headphones
4.1. Place the speaker housing back over the earcup, then fasten it with 5 screws.
4.2. Align the edge of the earpad cushion with the groove on the earcup, then work the rest of it till the earpad sits securely on the earcup.
