Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Power Button Flex Cable on the Sony WH-1000XM3 Headphones at Home
In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace a torn or damaged power button flex cable on the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.
Step 1: Remove the Left Earpad Cushion
The power button is located on the left side. For this repair, we will only disassemble the left earcup.
1.1. Insert a strong metal pry tool into the seam between the earpad cushion and the earcup, then gently work the tool along the perimeter of the earcup till the two parts separate.
1.2. Remove the foam pad and set it aside.
Step 2: Disassemble the Left Earcup
2.1. Extract all the screws from the earcup housing with a 1.5 mm Phillips screwdriver and set them aside. The screws are of different lengths, so store them separately in different slots on the rubber work mat.
2.2. Remove the plastic piece from the earcup and set it aside.
2.3. Unfasten the single screw securing the power button flex cable to the earcup housing.
2.4. Flip the earcup over and move the touch gesture control panel out of the way to reveal the power button flex cable connector.
2.5. Unplug the power button flex cable from the connector by wiggling it as you pull outward with your fingers.
2.6. Flip the earcup back over, then pull the damaged power button flex cable all the way out from the earcup housing.
Step 3: Install New Power Button Flex Cable
3.1. Grab a new power button flex cable and align the light and button with the plastic piece for the LED and the button pusher on the earcup housing. Then feed the flex cable through the opening in the earcup housing, flip the earcup, and pull the cable out from the other side.
3.2. Fasten the single 1.5 mm Phillips screw on the power button to hold it securely in place.
3.3. Flip the earcup over, then plug in the power button flex cable.
Step 4: Reassemble the Sony WH-1000XM3
4.1. Align the touch gesture control panel with the earcup housing, then, holding everything together, flip the earcup and fasten all the 1.5 mm Phillips screws to secure the earcup assembly. Don’t forget to reinstall the top plastic moulding that you removed.
4.2. Insert the foam pad into the earcup housing.
4.3. Align the earpad cushion with the earcup, then press down till you hear all the retaining clips click securely into place.
