Step-by-Step Sony MDR-XB950N1 Teardown and Repair Guide

In this detailed DIY tutorial, we show you how to disassemble and repair the Sony MDR-XB950N1 wireless Bluetooth headphones yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.

Step 1: Remove the Earpad Cushions

1.1. Grip the earpad cushion with your fingers and gently pull it away from the earcup to release it from the retaining clips.

1.2. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the seam between the mesh pad and the earcup housing, then gently work the tool around the perimeter to remove the mesh pad.

Repeat the steps on both earcups.

Step 2: Disassemble the Left Earcup

2.1. Unfasten the 4 Phillips screws securing the speaker housing to the earcup.

2.2. Lift the speaker housing gently to reveal the wires. Apply soldering flux to the connection, then desolder the speaker wires.

2.3. Peel away the adhesive tape to reveal the solder points on the main board.

2.4. Take a photo of the wires to use as reference during reassembly, then apply soldering flux to all the connections.

2.5. Desolder all the wires connected to the main board.

2.6. Unfasten 3 small black screws from the main board with a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver.

2.7. Gently wiggle the main board out from the housing with your fingers, then set it aside.

2.8. Remove the LED light indicators and the MS port.

2.9. Pop the earcup hinge from the swivel assembly with your fingers, then pull the main wire out from the other side.

Step 3: Disassemble the Left Headband Hinge Swivel Assembly

3.1. Remove the plastic piece from the hinge arm with a flathead screwdriver.

3.2. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the seam between the two halves of the swivel arm, then gently work the tool around the perimeter till the two parts separate.

3.3. Pull the main wire out from the swivel arm.

3.4. Unfasten 2 screws securing the swivel assembly with a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver.

3.5. Remove the metal horseshoe lock with a flathead screwdriver, then pull the main wire out from the swivel arm.

3.6. Unfasten the 2 Phillips screws from the headband swivel hinge.

3.7. Pull out the small tab marked "L" to expose the screw. Use a 1.5 mm Phillips screwdriver to remove the single screw securing the slider mechanism, then remove the outer panel.

3.8. Unfasten the 2 Phillips screws holding the hinge assembly, then pull the main wire out from the hinge.

3.9. Pop off the inside panel.

Step 4: Disassemble the Right Earcup

4.1. Unfasten the 4 screws attached to the speaker housing and flip it. Be careful not to tear the wire.

4.2. Disconnect the battery.

4.6. Pull the mic-side (MS) port out of the earcup housing.

4.7. Pull the earcup swivel away from the headband.

4.8. Remove the battery from the earcup housing with a nylon spudger.

Step 5: Disassemble the Right Headband Hinge Swivel Assembly

5.1. Remove the top plastic piece of the earcup swivel with a flathead screwdriver.

5.2. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the seam between the inner and outer panels of the swivel arm.

5.3. Pull the main wire out from the right swivel arm.

5.4. Unfasten the two 1.5mm Phillips screws from the swivel arm.

5.5. Remove the metal horseshoe lock with a flathead screwdriver, then slide the main wire out from the swivel arm.

5.6. Unfasten the 2 screws from the headband swivel assembly with a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver.

5.7. Pull out the small tab marked "R" to expose the screw. Use a 1.5 mm Phillips screwdriver to remove the single screw securing the slider mechanism, then remove the outer panel.

5.8. Remove the 2 screws from the swivel hinge with a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver, then slide it out from the main wire.

5.9. Pop the inner panel away from the headband slider.
