Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing a Wobbly or Loose Charging Port on the Sony WH-1000XM5 Headphones at Home
In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace a loose or wobbly charger port on the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.
Step 1: Remove the Right Earpad Cushion
The charging port is located inside the right earcup. We will start the repair process by disassembling the right earcup.
1.1. Insert a strong metal pry tool into the seam between the earpad cushion and the earcup, then gently work the tool along the perimeter till the two halves separate.

1.2. Remove the foam pad and set it aside.

Step 2: Separate the Touch Panel and the Earcup Housing
2.1. Unfasten the 8 2.0mm Phillips screws from the earcup housing and store them in one of the slots provided on the rubber work mat.

2.2. Flip the touch panel, disconnect the ribbon cable, and set it aside.

Step 3: Disconnect the Battery
Disconnect the battery wires with a flathead screwdriver.

Step 4: Extract the Wobbly or Loose Charging Port from the Housing
4.1. Disconnect the charging port, MS port, and microphone ribbon cables.

4.2. Unplug the main internal wire from the circuit board.

4.3. Unfasten the 2 small screws to remove the power board.

4.4. Preserve the thermal paste by pasting it on the power board.

4.5. Lift the waterproof gasket halfway to access the charging port.

4.6. Unfasten the single screw securing the charging port to the earcup housing.

4.7. Pull the ribbon cable out from the top piece.

4.8. Place the waterproof gasket back on the top piece.

4.9. Unfasten the single screw securing the worn-out charging port to the housing.

4.10. Discard the old charging port.

Step 5: Install New Charging Port
5.1. Install a new charging port and secure it in place with a single screw.

5.2. Feed the charging port ribbon cable through the gasket in the top piece.

5.3. Fasten the single screw on the top piece.

Step 6: Reassemble the Sony WH-1000XM5
6.1. Reinstall the waterproof rubber gasket by pressing down with your fingers.

6.2. Install the power board and fasten it with 2 screws.

6.3. Reconnect the charging port, microphone, MS port, main board, and battery ribbon cables.

6.4. Reconnect the touch panel ribbon cable.

6.5. Align the touch panel with the earcup, then flip it over and fasten all 8 screws with a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver.

6.6. Insert the foam mesh.

6.7. Align the earpad cushion with the earcup and press them together till the clips click into place.
