Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing a Wobbly or Loose Charging Port on the Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones at Home

In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace a loose or wobbly charger port on the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.

Step 1: Remove the Right Earpad

The charging port is located inside the right earpad. For this repair, we will only disassemble the right side.

1.1. Insert a strong metal pry tool under the earpad cushion near the charging port, and gently pry it out from the rest of the earcup.

1.2. Remove the mesh piece and store it safely.

Step 2: Disassemble the Right Speaker Housing

2.1. Unfasten the 5 small black screws with a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver and store them safely in one of the slots in the rubber work mat.

2.2. Remove the rubber tab with a flathead screwdriver and set it aside.

2.3. Peel off the rubber gasket covering the mic-side (MS) ribbon cable with a flathead screwdriver.

2.4. Get underneath the “Y” shaped plastic tab with a flathead screwdriver and peel it off the adhesive. Be careful not to tear the ribbon cable.

2.5. Use a plastic spudger to disconnect the ribbon cable from the connector.

2.6. Extract the plastic speaker housing using a flathead screwdriver.

2.7. As you pull the speaker housing, push the ribbon from the microphone through the opening. The ribbon is connected to the power board, and there is limited slack. Using excessive force may rip out the connector or damage the cable.

2.8. Once you create enough space, insert precision tweezers to disconnect the ribbon cable from the power board.

2.9. Disconnect the speaker wire from the power board, then set the entire assembly aside to gain access to the charging port.

Step 3: Remove the Loose or Wobbly Charging Port

3.1. Disconnect the ribbon cable connecting the charging port to the PCB with a flathead screwdriver and precision tweezers.

3.2. Unfasten the single 1.5mm Phillips screw securing the charging port to the earcup housing.

3.3. Extract the old charging port with precision tweezers, then toss it in the trash.

Step 4: Install New Genuine Charging Port

4.1. Grab a new charging port and connect the ribbon cable.

4.2. Align the charging port with the space provided in the earcup housing, then secure it in place by fastening the single 1.5mm Phillips screw.

Step 5: Reassemble the Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones

5.1. Connect the speaker wire to the power board. Pull the microphone cable through the opening on the speaker housing to create slack before the next step.

5.2. Connect the microphone ribbon to the power board. Leave plenty of slack in the ribbon to prevent damage during reassembly.

5.3. As you lower the speaker assembly into place, pull the slack out from the microphone ribbon.

5.4. Fasten the 5 screws securing the speaker housing.

5.5. Connect the microphone cable to the speaker housing. Align the holes in the cable with the pins on the speaker driver, then press the cable down. The old adhesive is quite sticky and will hold the cable in place.

5.6. Align the 2 small holes in the “Y” shaped plastic housing with the 2 pins on the speaker driver and push down on it for a secure fit.

5.7. Tuck the ribbon cable inside the speaker housing using precision tweezers.

5.8. Install the rubber gasket.

5.9. Install the second rubber gasket. Using precision tweezers, insert the side of the gasket without the extension, then gently push the other side until it fits securely.

Step 6: Reinstall the Earpad Cushion

6.1. Install the foam mesh.

6.2. Align the earpad cushion with the earcup, find the indicator to identify which side the cushion is for, align it with the indicator on the bottom of the earcup, and press down for a secure fit.
