Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Left and Right Speaker Drivers on the Sony WH-1000XM6 Wireless Bluetooth Headphones
In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace the blown left and right speaker drivers on the Sony XM6 wireless headphones. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.
We’re starting the repair from the right side. If you want to replace only the left speaker driver, navigate to the left speaker driver replacement section.
Step 1: Remove the Right Earpad Cushion
1.1. Insert a strong metal pry tool into the seam between the right earpad cushion and the earcup housing, then gently work the tool around the perimeter till the two parts separate.
1.2. Remove the right foam pad and set it aside.
Step 2: Extract the Right Speaker Driver
2.1. Unfasten the 5 small Phillips screws and store them safely in one of the slots provided on the rubber work mat.
2.2. Dislodge the rubber tab with a flathead screwdriver, then pull it out with your fingers.
2.3. Unplug the microphone ribbon from the main board with precision tweezers.
2.4. Unplug the main speaker wire from the PCB with a flathead screwdriver.
Step 3: Install a New Right Speaker Driver
3.1. Plug the speaker wires back into the power board.
3.2. Fasten the five 1.5mm Phillips screws onto the speaker housing.
3.3. Install the microphone ribbon to the main board cable with precision tweezers and a flathead screwdriver.
3.4 Tuck the wires and components down with your fingers, then reinstall the rubber tab over the ribbon connector.
Step 4: Install the Right Earpad Cushion
4.1. Insert the right foam pad into the groove.
4.2. Align the tabs on the right earpad cushion with the divots on the right earcup, and press along the perimeter till you hear the retaining clips click into place.
Step 5: Remove the Left Earpad Cushion
5.1. Insert a strong metal pry tool into the seam between the left earpad cushion and the earcup housing, then gently work the tool around the perimeter till the two parts separate.
5.2. Remove the left foam pad and set it aside.
Step 6: Extract the Blown Left Speaker Driver
6.1. Unfasten the five 1.5mm Phillips screws from the speaker housing, then store them separately in one of the slots on the work mat.
6.2. Remove the rubber tab with a flathead screwdriver.
6.3. Unplug the microphone ribbon cable from the main board.
6.4. Unplug the main speaker wire from the Bluetooth board with a flathead screwdriver.
Step 7: Install a New Left Speaker Driver
7.1. Connect the main speaker wire to the Bluetooth board.
7.2. Reinstall the five screws on the speaker housing with a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver.
7.3. Connect the left mic-side (MS) ribbon cable to the Bluetooth board.
7.4. Install the left rubber pad.
Step 8: Install the Left Earpad Cushion
8.1. Insert the right foam pad into the groove.
8.2. Align the tabs on the left earpad cushion with the divots on the earcup, and press along the perimeter till you hear the retaining clips click into place.
