Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Malfunctioning Main Board on the Bose QuietComfort (QC) Ultra Wireless Headphones Yourself

In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to replace a malfunctioning main board on Bose QuietComfort (QC) Ultra headphones. The repair process is similar for both sides. We will highlight the minor differences that you need to remember while repairing the headphones yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.

Step 1: Extract the Earpad Cushion

1.1. Insert a strong metal pry tool into the seam between the earpad cushion and the earcup, and gently pry it off.

1.2. Extract the foam mesh with the pry tool and set it aside.

Step 2: Extract the Speaker Housing

2.1. Unfasten 4 screws securing the speaker housing to the earcup and store them in one of the slots on the rubber work mat.

2.2. Flip the speaker housing gently from the bottom to reveal the speaker cable. Use precision tweezers to flip the lock and unplug the ribbon cable, then set the speaker aside.

Step 3: Extract the Faulty Left and Right Main Boards

3.1. Apply heat to the adhesive blobs covering the ribbon connectors, then peel off the old glue using precision tweezers.

3.2. Unplug all the ribbon cables from the main board.

3.3. Apply soldering flux over all the wires connected to the main board, then desolder them with a soldering iron. The left side has 3 extra wires connected to the battery that you must also remove.

Ninja Repair Tip: Take a photo of the wires soldered to the main board to use as a reference while resoldering them.

3.4. Unfasten two 2.0 mm Phillips screws securing the main board to the earcup housing, then store them carefully in one of the slots on the rubber work mat.

Step 4: Install a New Left or Right Main Board

4.1. Grab a new main board, then align it with the small pin in the earcup housing, so that it remains in place.

4.2. Fasten two 2.0mm Phillips screws to the main board.

4.3. Reconnect the ribbon cables to the main board.

4.4. Resolder the main wires to the main board using the reference photograph to ensure all the wires are connected in their correct positions. When replacing the left main board, remember to resolder the 3 battery wires.

Step 5: Reassemble the Bose QuietComfort (QC) Ultra Headphones

5.1. Grab the left or right speaker housings and plug in the ribbon cables to the main board with precision tweezers.

5.2. Flip the speaker housing over the earcup, then secure the assembly by fastening four 1.5mm Phillips screws.

5.3. Insert the foam mesh.

5.4. Align the grooves on the earpad cushion with those on the earcup and push them into place.
