Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing a Dead or Failing Battery on the Sony WH-1000XM3 Wireless Bluetooth Headphones Yourself
In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to fix a worn-out battery on the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.
Step 1: Remove the Right Earpad
The battery is located in the right earcup. So, we’ll only need to work on the right side.
1.1. Insert a strong metal pry tool into the seam between the earpad and the earcup and gently work the tool along the perimeter till the earpad cushion separates.
1.2. Set the foam pad aside.
Step 2: Remove the Touch Panel
2.1. Use a 1.5 mm Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws securing the touch panel, then store them separately. The two upper screws are longer than the two lower screws, so make sure to reinstall each screw in its original position during reassembly.
2.2. Flip the headphones over, then insert a strong metal pry tool between the touch panel and the earcup housing and separate the two components.
2.3. Unplug the touch panel ribbon cable from the power board, then set it aside.
Step 3: Extract the Worn-out Battery
3.1. With a strong metal pry tool, gently lift the black tape with the ribbon attached to it from the battery and move it out of the way. Be careful not to break the cable or rip it from the power board.
3.2. Unplug the battery from the power board with a strong metal pry tool.
3.3. Move the wires out of the way.
3.4. Insert a sturdy metal pry tool underneath the battery and carefully work it around the edges to loosen the adhesive. Continue prying gently until you can lift the battery out of the housing.
Step 4: Install a New Genuine Battery
4.1. Align a new OEM 1000mAh battery with the housing, then gently press down on it with your fingers till the adhesive bonds with the surface.
4.2. Tuck the wires back under the clip.
4.3. Connect the battery cable to the power board.
4.4. Place the black tape over the battery.
Step 5: Reassemble the Sony XM3 Headphones
5.1. Reattach the touch panel ribbon cable to the power board.
5.2. Flip the touch panel over and secure it with four 1.5mm screws.
5.3. Align the foam pad with the earcup housing and place it in the correct orientation.
5.4. Align the tabs on the earpad cushion with the grooves on the earcup housing and press them together till you hear the retaining clips click into place.
