Step-by-Step DIY Guide to Replacing the Malfunctioning Power Board on the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Bluetooth Headphones Yourself
In this detailed DIY repair guide, we show you how to fix the power board on the Sony XM5 wireless headphones yourself. Follow each step carefully and use the accompanying images as a visual guide to complete the repair with confidence.
Step 1: Remove the Right Earpad Cushion
The charging port is located inside the right earcup. We will start the repair process by disassembling the right earcup.
1.1. Insert a strong metal pry tool into the seam between the earpad cushion and the earcup, then gently work the tool along the perimeter till the two halves separate.
1.2. Remove the foam pad and set it aside.
Step 2: Separate the Touch Panel and the Earcup Housing
2.1. Unfasten the eight 2.0mm Phillips screws from the earcup housing and store them in one of the slots provided on the rubber work mat.
2.2. Flip the touch panel, disconnect the ribbon cable, and set it aside.
Step 3: Disconnect the Battery
Disconnect the battery wires with a flathead screwdriver.
Step 4: Extract the Faulty Power Board from the Earcup Housing
4.1. Disconnect the charging port, MS port, and microphone ribbon cables.
4.2. Unplug the main internal wire from the power board.
4.3. Unfasten the 2 small screws to remove the power board.
4.4. Desolder the 2 small wires from the power board and discard it. Take a picture of the wires to use as reference during reassembly.
Step 5: Install a New Power Board
5.1. Solder the two wires to the new power board according to the reference image.
5.2. Transplant the thermal paste from the old to the new power board.
5.3. Install the power board and fasten it with 2 screws.
Step 6: Reassemble the Sony XM5 Headphone
6.1. Reconnect the microphone, MS port, main board, and battery ribbon cables.
6.2. Reconnect the touch panel ribbon cable.
6.3. Align the touch panel with the earcup, then flip it over and fasten all 8 screws with a 1.5mm Phillips screwdriver.
6.4. Insert the foam mesh.
6.5. Align the earpad cushion with the earcup and press them together till the clips click into place.
