iPad Pro Charging Port Repair: When a New Port Fixes It (and When It Won't)
Short answer: If your iPad Pro is having a hard time charging, a charging port replacement usually fixes it for about $200 (parts, labor and shipping both ways). The catch is timing. If the pins inside the port get bent far enough to touch each other, they can short out and take chips on the main board with them. At that point a $200 repair can turn into a $400 to $500 board repair, and sometimes the iPad can't be saved at all.
We see this on our repair bench every week, so here is what the difference looks like and how to know which side of the line your iPad is on.

Left: pins bent over and touching each other. Right: damaged and worn, but every pin is still separated. Both came out of customer iPad Pros.
Two bad ports, two very different repairs
Left port: pins touching (the expensive one)
Look closely at the left port in the photo. The thin metal pins inside the USB-C tongue are bent over and crossing into each other. Once that happens, the power coming in from your charger can land on a pin that was never meant to carry it.
From the iPads we have opened up, when we find a port like this we almost always find board damage too. The charging control chip is usually the first part to fail, and most of the time another chip on the board fails along with it. So even with a brand new port installed, the iPad still won't charge or power on. What should have been a simple port swap becomes board-level repair, and some boards are too far gone to fix.
Right port: worn but not shorted (the easy one)
The right port is clearly damaged, but none of the pins are crossing over or touching each other. Nothing has shorted, so the board is fine. On iPads with a port like this, swapping in a new charging port fixed the problem completely. The customer got their iPad back charging like new.
Why waiting can double (or triple) the cost
| Situation | What gets fixed | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Port is worn, loose or dirty, pins not touching | Charging port replacement | About $200 |
| Pins bent and touching, board chips damaged | New port plus board-level repair | $400 to $500 |
| Short spread too far on the board | Board may not be repairable | Device can be lost |

Early warning signs your iPad Pro charging port is going bad
A port almost never dies all at once. It gives you warnings first. If you notice any of these, that is the time to get it looked at, before the pins have a chance to short:
- The cable feels loose or falls out easily
- You have to hold the cable at an angle or wiggle it to charge
- Charging only works with the plug flipped one way
- The iPad keeps connecting and disconnecting (the charging chime over and over)
- Charging is a lot slower than it used to be
- Accessories, displays or USB-C drives stop connecting reliably
- The port area gets warm while charging
- You can see bent, dark or burnt-looking pins inside the port
What to do (and what not to do) when charging acts up
- Try a different cable and charger first. A worn cable can act just like a bad port.
- Don't force the plug in or wiggle it to get a charge. That is exactly how pins get bent over into each other.
- Never dig in the port with metal like a paperclip, pin or tweezers. It can bend pins or short them out instantly.
- Back up your iPad now while it still turns on. If the board gets damaged later, your photos and files may not be recoverable.
- Get it repaired early. A port that is only worn is a simple, predictable repair. A port that has shorted is not.

One tip if you do it yourself: before you install the new port, look closely at the old one. If the pins were touching each other, a new port may not be enough, and the board may need a technician.
FAQ
Will replacing the charging port fix my iPad Pro?
If the port is worn, loose or dirty and the pins never touched each other, yes, a port replacement usually fixes it completely. If the pins shorted, chips on the board may also be damaged and need repair.
How much does an iPad Pro charging port repair cost?
About $200 at JoesGE, including parts, labor and shipping both ways. If the board was damaged by a shorted port, expect $400 to $500, if the board can be repaired.
Can a bad charging port damage the motherboard?
Yes. When bent pins touch each other, power can short across them. In our experience this usually kills the charging control chip and often a second chip on the board.
My iPad still charges if I hold the cable just right. Can I wait?
We don't recommend it. Wiggling the cable is what bends pins into each other, and that is when a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.
My iPad won't turn on at all. Is it just the port?
It might be, but a no-power iPad often has board damage too. Send it in and we will diagnose it and give you the real price before any work is done.
