Step 1: Remove the Right Earpad and Unlock the Speaker Housing
1.1 Gently lift the right earpad to detach it, as it is magnetically attached.
1.2 Using the Pentalobe 1.2 bit from the 50-in-1 Repair Kit, perform a quarter turn to unlock the four pentalobe screws: turn the top-right and bottom-left screws right, and the bottom-right and top-left screws left.
1.3 Carefully slide a Flexible Pry Tool between the plastic and metal housing to break the double-sided tape, working around the edges, and apply gentle upward pressure to pop the speaker housing free, avoiding damage to the housing.
1.4 Carefully lift the speaker housing, ensuring not to pull too far due to the connected ribbon cable.
Step 2: Remove the Speaker Screws and Extract the Speaker
2.1 Using the Flathead 2.0mm bit from the 50-in-1 Repair Kit, insert it into one of the four divots on the larger screw and turn counterclockwise to loosen it, then unscrew it completely.
2.2 Switch to the T4 bit from the 50-in-1 Repair Kit and unscrew the remaining three T4 screws securing the speaker.
2.3 Carefully pry up the speaker from the top using the Flathead 2.0mm bit from the 50-in-1 Repair Kit or a Flexible Pry Tool, applying minimal force to break it free.
2.4 Lift the speaker out, noting the two contact pins that connect it, and place it to the side.
Step 3: Install the New Speaker and Secure the Screws
3.1 Place the new speaker into the housing, aligning the contact pins first, then lowering it to align with the screw holes.
3.2 Using the Flathead 2.0mm bit from the 50-in-1 Repair Kit, insert the larger screw with divots and start threading it clockwise, but do not tighten fully.
3.3 Using the T4 bit from the 50-in-1 Repair Kit, insert one of the three T4 screws and partially tighten it, ensuring the speaker sits evenly.
3.4 Insert the remaining two T4 screws using the T4 bit from the 50-in-1 Repair Kit, partially tightening each, then tighten all four screws in a crisscross pattern, starting with the flathead screw, then the T4 screws, until snug but not over-torqued.
Step 4: Reattach the Speaker Housing
4.1 Optional: If the original double-sided tape is damaged, cut a small strip of Double-Sided Tape and apply it along the edge of the speaker housing, pressing it down with the Flathead 2.0mm bit from the 50-in-1 Repair Kit for a secure seal.
4.2 Remove the protective layer from the double-sided tape, if applied, ensuring the ribbon cable is not kinked.
4.3 Carefully place the speaker housing back, ensuring proper alignment, and press it down firmly to secure the tape.
4.4 Using the Pentalobe 1.2 bit from the 50-in-1 Repair Kit, perform a quarter turn to lock the four pentalobe screws: turn the top-right and bottom-left screws left, and the bottom-right and top-left screws right.
4.5 Place the right earpad back onto the speaker housing, ensuring it snaps into place magnetically.
Step 5: Get back to enjoying your gear 🤓
5.1 Verify the speaker housing and earpad are secure, test audio to confirm the new speaker works, and enjoy your restored AirPods Max.
